And because I am who I am, it got me thinking about great movie library scenes that already exist. Like the brightest star of an intricate constellation that would be impossible to find without its light, a great scene tends to provide greater meaning to the movie around it.

None of the modern classics that made it onto our list can be distilled into a single scene, but certain passages from them — like vivid flashbulb memories, or a lighthouse guiding us back to the shore — still manage to perfectly capture the essence of their full power. Most of the time, a film's script is a story plan. Sometimes, all it takes is a single scene to change moviemaking for good.
